Your Own Self

Prime minimalist jazz contemplation for yer lugs, Your Own Self, arguably the most transcendent entry in the mighty Opus One catalogue, from Garrett List, the American composer and trombonist, whose body of work, although not vast particularly vast, would see him go on to release on heavyweight Italian jazz stable Horo (American Images, 1978), as well as rubbing shoulders with Robert Ashley, David Behrman and Maggi Payne on Lovely Music. Pt. I is a subtle spoken narrative taking shape over swooning, reverberant cycles of barely-there piano and vibraphone - this is the kind of jazz-poetry you can get with, no motivational gassing or comment on current affairs, but rather three vocalists employed to subtly expand and deepen the swelling ocean of sound, their words drifting in and out of focus constantly. Your Own Self's initial calm ultimately gives way to turbulence  - powerful currents taking hold beneath the surface, players pushing it as far as they can go, yet as wild as it gets, never feeling entirely improvised, like these folks know the way home.
