Unveiled / Shadows

Stirring self-released 7" from XVARR, made up of two vocal tracks ('Unveiled' and 'Shadows'), recorded in 2012, and two instrumentals 'Empurpled Sperm' and 'A Reverie'. Seems mad to think about it now, but there was a time, not even all that long ago, when contemporary minimal synth/wave was a rare beast indeed. Even in the second half of the 2000s, by which point MW and a handful of others had begun exhuming the more obscure cassette-gods of the late ‘70s and early ‘80s, if you came across any present-day practitioner of the stuff, they would inevitably be a proper weirdo, and their music sound a bit...off.  GOOD times. ‘Unveiled’, which kicks off this new self-released 7” from XVARR (but was recorded in 2012) reminds me of that now vanished era, there’s something refreshingly awkward and iffy about it, it sounds genuinely disconcerting, genuinely psychotic, the kind of record that invites you round for dinner only to reveal that you ARE dinner. Spiritually it reminds me a bit of Zerkalo stuff from a decade or so back, bits of Silvia Kastel and Control Unit, and maybe even Haus Arafna. XVARR's co-conspirator Egypt Erotique brings an eldritch, perniciously seductive vibe with her vocals - she could be whispering sweet nothings or she could be urging you to burn the house down with your family still inside and then turn the gun on yourself. XVARR himself narrates the other 2012-vintage track, 'Shadows' - it sounds to me like Jhon Balance is alive and stoned and selling me home insurance over the phone, and actually it's quite engrossing...On the flip, two effortlessly brilliant, emotionally eloquent instrumentals that are up there with the very best of XVARR's sainted synth work - the haunting, elektronic-musik-aus-suburban-england arpeggiations of 'Empurpled Sperm' and the gorgeous stately drift-blooz of 'Reverie' (as far as I'm concerned nobody alive does this stuff better.)
