Top Ten: 2008-2018

Listmania! Both volumes of James Hoff’s immense TOP TEN project back in stock.

Ever since its April 1998 issue, Artforum magazine has been inviting critics and doers from the art/music/film/writer sphere to compile a list of their favourite recent exhibitions, concerts, TV programs, books, events, whatever++, complete with paragraph-length descriptions, for their regular 'Top Ten’ column . New York-based artist James Hoff (remember his stuff on Pan? Was good!) has compiled all of these columns to date into two doorstop publications, one for 1998-2008, and one for 2008-2018 - reproducing all the text but redacting the accompanying images, so that the pictorial layout becomes a single austere graphic plane of black squares and the odd oval and what remains is simply THE INFORMATION.

And what information! If you’re anything like me - poor you! - the doorways that lead you to hitherto unfamiliar artists, authors, musicians, and ultimately MORE DOORWAYS - are often more thrilling than whatever's actually behind the door. Yeah I’m one of those c****s get my more pleasure growing and manicuring my list of films TO WATCH than actually watching any of the things. Anyway, if you suffer from that particular sickness, or are just curious to cop beautifully argued recommendations from the likes of (deep breath) John Waters, Linder, John Cale, Shintaro Sakamoto, Arca, Julia Holter, Vince Aletti, Kaitlyn Aurelia Smith, Wolfgang Tillmans, Discwoman, Carsten Nicolai, Pauline Olivero ++ then these two books will blow your disgustingly tasteful metropolitan mind to SMITHEREENS. Not cheap, but they truly are the perfect marriage of beautiful artyfact (do people have coffee tables anymore?) and directory of pure unadulterated INTEL.
