Mind-spirallin’ cinematics to coincide with Tina Damgaard’s installation, now righteously finding a homely vinyl pressing on Forlag For Fri Musik, after blowing us away in mid-2019 when a not-so-metaphorical handful of tapes were procured from a Monokultur show in Gothenburg.
A dense and hallucinatory distillation, the LP carries the same clairvoyant poise and form championed on the Monokultur full length, whilst calmly, stylishly suggesting new avenues for exploration. Delving into murky, crawling, minimalist auditory experiments in the veins of Randy Greif or Sleep Chamber, “The Spiral” coils into astral, work-fatigued daydreams and rhythmic mechanics that could at points be mistaken for Will Sergeants stone classic ,“Themes for Grind”.
These smoked out backdrops allow for melancholic guitar tones and odd dustings of Desertshore-style organ to drift like spectres across sparse, feedback-gargling sound pools and form some of her most empirical, abstract displays of songwriting to date in “Bones” and “Tears Run Out”. The affect is completely intoxicating. Think somewhere between more recent Neutral outings, the ambient sensitivity of Deux Filles and early Grouper and you’ll be able to at least imagine this invitation to a new way of dreaming.
While picking favourites from the LPs to come from the seemingly imperishable Forlag microcosm sorta feels like one of those things in which it would be cruel to do so, “The Spiral” feels like one of the most dynamic and simultaneously immersive long-players to come outta ANYWHERE.
