The Fabulist

Absolutely blinding new Ashtrays, edition of 50, anchored in perfectly bluey-grey, dronal ambient-techno (!) climes...but sounding far more texturally nuanced and psychologically complex than any actual ambient techno record you've encountered in the last 15-odd years, and also 500% more germane to a wet November afternoon in England waiting for a rail-replacement-bus that never comes (what, me?!)

Anyone who's been following Phil Todd's recent electronics-heavy work will know he's operating on a godlike level that belies its humble CDr presentation. Expanding on the concise but effortlessly space-time-playdo'ing  exotica of A Propos de Naufrage ("NO GUITAR WHATSOEVER"), The Fabulist is an even deeper, rangier blooz, an all-gates-open, min2max psychedelia that refuses to conform to genre or formula, its sticky drum-machine patterns and sparse elegant tone-ripples slowly gathering mass and momentum and extraterrestrial frazzle and ultimately making a mockery of any presumed separation between the worlds of within and without. Tonight Matthew, I'm gonna be...THE WEATHER!  We've said it before but: we are not worthy.
