The Company was a bedroom-studio duo comprised of Amir Shoat and Benedict R. Wallers (The Rebel, Country Teasers), and this, their second album, is their impish, misanthropic, marginal masterpiece, traversing exploratory scum-concrète, cranked, ultra-volatile synth-pop, snickering Burroughs-via-Bernard Manning cut-ups and gawjus plaintive keyboard moods - sometimes, GULP, in the space of one song. As on Rebel classics like Prawns, low-budget minimal electronics are coaxed into maximum emotional and imaginative effect, whether taking centre-stage or providing a setting for Wallers' magnificently haughty, blackly comic Sprechgesang - although with Shoat at the controls there is less of the obvious garage/post-punk vibe (guitars almost entirely absent) and more of the heavily-medicated, haven't-slept-in-days abstraction and icily severe kling-klang. Special mention has to go to 'New Machines', which unravels into an almost Flaming Tunes-esque, avant-teatime pastoral; the divebombing omni-offensive electroklash of 'Vagina Sagen'; and in particular the imperious eight-minute-opener 'Whip Feet Trilogy', briefly coming over like Whitehouse if they’d ditched the WASPs and decide to pursue some kinda damaged-glam aesthetic instead. Never has the threat of torture sounded so life-affirming!
