Even As We Speak
Blue Suburban Skies

Bittasweet, iridescent Aussie jangle-pop from Sarah Records-anointed Even As We Speak...a faithful reissue of their super-rare '87 7" originally issued by Big Home Productions.

While this Sydney gruppe's greatest pop moment is unquestionably 'Falling Down The Stairs' (never released as a single, inexplicably), the Flying Nun-ish 'Blue Suburban Skies' has an equal claim, and in 1990 it would form the backbone of the band's celebrated 5-track EP for Sarah. With their soaring harmonies and effortless sheen, they were a band that coulda and shoulda been huge, but it never quite happened for 'em, though certainly they gave it a good crack, coming over to the UK and giggin their hands to the bone, ticklin the upper echelons of the indie-charts and doin a bunch of sessions for John Peel ("The story I like to tell," singer Mary Wyer recalls in Michael White's Popkiss, "is when [Peel] said to me, "You know, you remind me very much of a young Germaine Greer - and I should know, because I fucked her.'" Er...

'Blue Suburban Skies' is nigh-on perfect, but arguably the real gem here is the B-side, a tear-jerking cover of New Order's 'Bizarre Love Triangle' that sheds Barney and cru's shiny shellsuit of synths and gated drums to reveal the true sadness and resignation and sense of irrecoverable loss lurking within...

A perfect, perfect 7".
