It’s been hard to keep up with the number of amazing records coming from Gothenburg in recent times… in point of fact, it’s been hard just to keep up with the number of amazing records coming from ONE MAN in Gothenburg: JJ Ulius. Not content with helming the mighty Monokultur, and releasing fine outsider-pop solo tackle under his own name, he is one half (with Elin Egnstrom) of Skiftande Enheter...And not content with releasing just one Skiftande album in 2019 (the self-titled jobby that came out on Levande Begravd), here’s ANOTHER.
It’s no shame on its predecessor – which we loved – to say that Snubblar genom drömmar is The One, a salt-and-sugar-rush of noisy shimmering indie-pop / punk psychedelia that, now I've heard it, I can't imagine ever living without. JJ is proving to be one of the great DIY stylists of our time - abetted here by crack studio bod Mattias Malm, he raids all the best bits of Felt and The Dentists and Servants and [insert your own chosen late '80s / early 90s superheroes here], and effortessly massages it into his own coherent bedroom blitz... you could spend years in 7" bins and YouTube backwaters looking for old music as simultaneously light-footed and giddily atmospheric and emotionally stirring as this – you know what, DON'T BOTHER here's a NEW RECORD which is just the purest hit of THAT ESSENCE RARE that you live for.
And dunno about you, but I no longer care that I can't understand what the Swedish lyrics are about - maybe cos I’m enough of a narcissist to presume/pretend that he’s singing about my own EXACT situation/thoughts/feelings. But then I'm enough of a narcissist to presume that's what EVERYONE is singing about, always.
Anyway...an absolute melter (yeah I'm tired of writing belter), the only rock’n’roll LP I’ve heard this year that even begins to give Bobby Would and Itchy Bugger a run for their money. BURRRRRRRP
