I was a teenage rap fiend (fancy!) but E and self-importance knocked me off course and I’m sorry to report I know absolutely shit-all about the last 20-odd years of the world’s most popular music form. Oops! Still, This deep dank mixtape from Crud – seamlessly weaving together contemporary productions with “droney / experimental clobber” – makes me feel like I wanna make amends and get meself up to speed, but also leaves me thinking, is there any point? And would it even be possible? Like when you need a dentist, or pizza...sometimes it’s just better to hand over to a professional eh. Crud shows his class in the way he deploys the outré stuff sparingly, mostly so's you'd hardly notice, letting the thugged-out beats and prolix emcees – mad enough in themselves - dominate. But then there are also some pretty striking interventions too, like the cascading cathedral-oceans synth-strings that conclude side A in surreal, heart-stopping, head-rearranging fashion. Absolute belter!
Cassette edition of 64 copies for Habibi, with double-sided fold-out j-card "featuring some self-indulgent nonsense".
