Meditations On Caligari's Shadow

Previously unheard mind-sherbet from the Real Yorkshire Psychedelic Underground…The mysterious Shady Glyphs, comprising “Tony, Christoph Von Alphabet, Dugazoid, Billy Alphabet and Matt”, assembled in the bowels of Rawdon Orthopaedic Hospital on the Summer Solstice, 1997, to create this half-hour Kinetic Sound Sculpture, an interdimensional ram-raid that MoaA suggest might remind ye of Organum, NNCK, Anna Planeta “and other names probably unknown to these heads at the time”.

Yeah this is music made for its own sake, with zero regard for what's in vogue or what any other c**t is up to, created at a time when the entire history of messed-up sound wasn’t available at the stroke of a keyboard and the only way to stave off boredom and hold onto your sanity in the West Riding was to lay your sanity on the line…

The location and the title scream HORROR, but this is not some kinda hauntological ramble or gothic shlock-out... it's not electronic music, it’s certainly not rock, it’s not industrial or musique concrete…it's something truly sui generis and seemingly unmoored from all but the most ancient of rites - indeed this might just be the most far-out FOLK record we've ever heard, the "lead" instrument a soaring flute that sounds like it wandered off the set of Kes: A Space Odyssey, maintaining poise and equanimity as it navigates vast corridors of time-dilating reverb, undulating synths, demonic squawks and mutterings, ersatz percussions (the sound of tidying up!) and alternatively purring and piercing drones of gods knows what provenance, the whole thing swelling improbably to a climax of properly life-affirming, whiskey-demolished shanty....I'VE BEEN SAILING THE SEA SO LONG...last orders in the pub at the end of the fucking cosmos!

You can hear probably hear some affinities with the ecstatic noise that Ashtray Navigations and Vibracathedral Orchestra were conjuring at the time, and there are premonitions of contemporary stuff like Francis Plagne’s Moss Trumpet or Olivier Brisson's Horizon Capiton, but honestly, this is out on its own. How are people still wanking over the NWW list when things like THIS are out there, undiscovered, undocumented...? Open your eyes! None of us know anything...
